  • Christmas Piñatas Workshop. Learn to decorate a Christmas Piñata.  Piñatas are very popular at Christmas during Las Posadas.   Piñatas are traditionally made with a clay pot base.  Many artisans make a living selling just the pot for people to decorate as they wish.  The traditional Christmas piñata style has points made of colorful paper resembling the Star of Bethlehem.  Piñatas are filled with guavas, oranges, jicamas, pieces of sugar cane, tejocotes and wrapped candies.

  • Participation in "La Noche de Rabanos" (Night of the Radishes) on December 23.  This event is a uniquely Oaxacan tradition.  In the zócalo, Oaxaca's main square, there is an exhibition of huge sculpted and decorated radishes (some measuring up to two feet long and weighing up to ten pounds).  These radishes are carved into nativity scenes of Jesus' birth, the manger, the inn, or other scenes expressing the history and culture of Oaxacans.  There is a contest to decide which are the best displays.  It is a prestigious honor to win this annual event.   http://www.christmas-in-oaxaca.com/night-of-radish.htm

  • Christmas Dinner with your host family.

  • Participation in a Patron Saint's Festival.  There are many Patron Saints and each gets its special day in the various nearby small towns with a local fair, fireworks, musical procession, excellent food, and other beautiful traditions.

  • Mexican Cuisine Class -  Prepare the traditional Mexican Christmas punch which is a hot fruit drink.   Also learn to prepare the delicious fritter which is a Mexican dessert that is round, thin, and made of flour, eggs, sugar and yeast.

  • Participation in the traditional "Calenda" on December 24.  This is the fourth day of the Posada pilgrimage. Groups from all over Oaxaca gather in the zócalo to celebrate the arrival of Christmas night.  After a parade around the zócalo and through Oaxaca, celebrants return to their churches to prepare for the 'Misa de Gallo' (mass of the rooster), the first worship celebration of the Christmas feast. http://www.oaxacainsider.com/oaxaca-events-and-festivals.asp
